Turkish coffee machines were having a real cultural moment — rising demand both at home and across café and restaurant menus. I saw an opportunity most single-product launches miss: building a platform brands could license, rather than designing one more standalone machine.
The goal was a family of three configurations — single-cup, single-cup with a water tank, and multi-cup with a water tank — sharing the same core engineering, so any brand could offer a coherent product range for a fraction of the usual development cost.
I designed the cooking chamber first and kept it completely fixed across all three versions — that's the one part no configuration could compromise. Everything else was treated as an assembly variable: the body extends in width or height depending on the model, but the additional length is built from parts that bolt onto the same shared core.
Design-to-cost and DFM were the actual subject of this project, not a constraint applied after the fact. The entire platform exists to prove that three distinct market positions can come from one tooling investment, one engineering base, one design language.
Idea
Most brands entering the Turkish coffee category have to choose: design for the home, or design for the café — rarely both, and almost never at a shared development cost. The idea was to remove that choice entirely.
A single licensable platform meant any brand could offer the right configuration for the right context, without commissioning three separate products from scratch.
Form
The cooking area stays identical across all three versions — the one element that defines whether the coffee is made correctly, and the one element that could never be treated as a variable. Around that fixed core, the body extends in width for the multi-cup version and in height for the water-tank versions.
Every version reads as part of the same family, not three unrelated machines wearing a shared logo — the proportions change, but the design language doesn't.
Function
The single-cup model serves home use directly. The water-tank versions remove the need to refill manually between cups — built specifically for café and restaurant volume, where speed and continuous output matter more than anything else.
Because the added components bolt directly onto the shared core, assembly stays simple regardless of configuration — no separate production line, no separate tooling for each model.
Differentiation
Most Turkish coffee machines on the market are designed as single, fixed products — a brand picks one SKU and stops there. This platform was designed to be licensed across multiple brands, each able to offer all three configurations under their own identity without absorbing the cost of three separate developments.
The differentiation isn't a feature on the machine — it's a business model embedded directly into the engineering.
Impact
As a concept platform, its value sits in what it proves: that design-to-cost discipline can turn one engineering investment into three genuinely different market offers — home, café, and high-volume foodservice — without diluting the design in any of them.
The real discipline of this project was in what I refused to change: the cooking chamber. Every other dimension — width, height, water system — could flex to create a new configuration, but the part that determines whether Turkish coffee actually comes out right had to stay constant no matter which version was being built.
This is where design-to-cost expertise actually shows. It's not about cutting corners — it's about identifying the one thing that can never be compromised, and building every other decision as a variable around it.
A complete, licensable product platform — three configurations, one shared engineering core, ready to be adapted to any brand entering the Turkish coffee category at any scale.
