Mov is a personal project — designed, produced, and kept. Its name comes from movement, and movement is its entire design logic: rotating the top of the lamp raises it like a screw, and as it rises, it dims. Turn it back down, the light comes back.
No electronics. No switch. No dimmer dial. The lamp controls its own light through its own physical form.
The starting point was a question about dimming: why does adjusting light always require a separate control — a switch, a dial, an app — when the lamp itself could be the control? The screw mechanism came from taking that question seriously.
The form followed the same discipline: a cylindrical aluminum body as simple as possible, housing an internal plastic mechanism that does all the functional work invisibly. Nothing on the outside communicates how it works until you touch it.
Idea
Most lamps treat dimming as a feature added on top of the light source — a separate slider, a touch panel, a button. Mov treats it as the lamp's only gesture: the physical act of turning and raising the top is the dimming control, inseparable from the form itself.
Form
A cylindrical aluminum body — as minimal as a lamp can be while still reading as one. The outer form gives no visual clue about the mechanism inside, which is intentional: the interaction reveals itself only when you reach for it.
Inside, a plastic mechanism translates the rotational movement into vertical travel and light control simultaneously. The simplicity of the exterior and the precision of the interior are the whole design.
Function
Turn the top clockwise — the lamp rises and brightens. Turn it counter-clockwise — it descends and dims. The screw movement is both the height adjustment and the dimming mechanism in one continuous gesture, with no additional control needed.
Designed specifically for bedroom use, where the quality of light — and the ritual of adjusting it — matters as much as the light itself.
Differentiation
Electronic dimmers are standard. Mechanical dimmers integrated into the lamp's physical movement are not. Mov's mechanism requires no electronics, no circuit, no app — just a form that moves and a user who interacts with it.
In a category where "smart" has come to mean connected and app-controlled, Mov is smart in the opposite direction: the intelligence lives in the geometry, not the circuitry.
Impact
Produced for personal use. Available to order. The mechanism is resolved, the form is validated, and the lamp exists — one of the rare personal projects that made it all the way from idea to physical object without compromise.
The hardest part wasn't the mechanism — it was the form. Once I committed to a cylindrical aluminum body, every dimension, every proportion, every detail had to be exactly right, because there was nothing else on the surface to look at. A cylinder is unforgiving: there's nowhere to hide a decision that isn't quite working.
What I'm most proud of is that the lamp doesn't explain itself. You pick it up, you turn it, and within seconds the logic is obvious. That intuitive legibility — without instructions, without markings — is what I was working toward from the beginning.
Mov exists. It sits on a bedside table, it dims without electronics, and it rises when you want more light. A personal project that became a real object — available to produce on request.
